Why we support Mónica García
Mónica García knows the 2nd District, because she's spent her whole life serving it. Born and raised on the Eastside, García is a product of local schools and a graduate of UC Berkeley and the University of Southern California. She is a former school guidance counselor and just the third Latina to be elected to the School Board in its 155-year history. As Board President, she helped the District manage devastating cuts from Sacramento, solving a deficit of more than $2 billion, while increasing graduation rates by 16 percent.
García has a practical plan to reduce the dropout problem.
With her bold call for "Diplomas for All", García has a specific plan to eliminate the dropout rate and make every student college-ready or career-prepared.
She'll focus on small schools with a personalized approach to learning.
García helped to bring more than 30 new neighborhood schools to the 2nd District and has led the creation of more personalized learning environments for students and teachers. As a result, 200,000 LAUSD students now attend small schools.
She'll fight for funding
– and to make sure dollars go to the classroom.
García understands that school quality comes down to resources, and she fought for more school funding. With the passage of Proposition 30, she'll make sure new dollars are spent as promised, to restore critical programs like art and PE.
She believes in giving parents and students choices.
Mónica García believes in giving greater flexibility and choice to parents, teachers and students. She expanded charter schools and fought to give parents the right to enroll their children in any public school of their choice.
